One of our proudest moments is when the team receives a note from one of our caring companion recipients, and as volunteers, it makes us feel so good! It is always a joy to learn our many hours of creating time for events, training dogs, teaching new people, and promotion are well worth our efforts. Come and join us with a donation, and empower us to do more!
My first exposure to “Puppy Love” was at a Good Sam camping club rally. There are usually between three and four hundred recreational vehicles at these spring and fall “Samborees”. There are always lots of events and seminars being offered to entertain, teach or provide demonstrations of items or subjects of interest to the many avid RV‘rs. Good Sam is a non-profit organization and members support several charities. A demonstration on Hearing & Service dog training titled “Puppy Love Caring Canines” by Grete Krause, drew our interest.
I had become a paraplegic two years previous at that time, following back surgery. Then after feeling the need for a companion, we had recently become the proud owners of an eight month old little Bichon puppy. We rescued “Buttons” from the Animal Humane Society here in Blaine and fell in love with him immediately. I never really dreamed that this small white puppy would actually become my service dog. The presentation and demonstrations included several Puppy Love trained dogs. Grete Krause, who is the trainer and founder, included information relating to the reasons that she had started this non-profit assistance dog-training program. One was that other service dog organizations refuse to train and existing pet. Grete has done just that with Puppy Love, though not all dogs qualify. They must have the proper temperament, intelligence, and desire to please. She receives other dogs from animal rescue groups, humane societies, and breeder donations. They are trained and donated to needy individuals or provide therapy to children with special needs, learning disabilities, or physical handicaps.
Grete met with us and started training Buttons and myself soon after. Since then we have been very successful following her training system. Buttons now has a special “Service Dog” cape that signifies that he is a full-fledged service dog and is entitled to accompany me in public. The training goes on and there is much more to learn. We have also completed training and certification as a “Therapy Dog”. This has been an exciting and rewarding experience for both Buttons, myself and my husband. One of the most useful things that he does is to retrieve my husband for me when I need assistance -on command “Find Dad”-no mater where he is around our home. He will close a door for me when I am on the wrong side to reach the door knob, he will pick up anything I drop that isn’t too heavy and climb up and hand it to me. Even tiny items like a key or a small piece of paper. Buttons is more than a loving companion; he is now a useful contributing member of our family.
……..Thank You Puppy Love.

We spent a fun day at Petco in Burnsville, Minnesota on January 21, 2012 learning more about Last Hope Rescue, other rescues and pet food offerings, and got to spin the wheel! We even accepted a donation from Mr. Bobby Jensen from Kare11, and he helped us with a boost to our spirits. Any time we can be of good use to the disabled individuals in Minnesota, it is a great thing.
If you have a friend or a family member who has experienced a life changing event, a dog can help. The team of an assistance dog and an disabled individual is a powerful force. When people use the natural instincts and talents of a canine companion, they find they can do almost anything. People need assistance, and sometimes they need that assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Other than your mother or your spouse, who else would be able to stick around for that expected time? Not many people have the ability to let life go forward with such constant care.
When you have a health concern or issue, it often causes great life style changes for you as an individual. Any time you find your strength fading into the general maintenance of keeping your disease at bay, you may need to empower your life with a caring companion. This addition to your day can assist you by helping you retrieve items, alert you when there are issues that need to be addressed immediately, and can help you by calling the paramedics when you need them.
As well, for those of us who are lucky to have great health, we can do a lot for those who need assistance by becoming donation teams, and recruit members of our healthy community to help those who need assistance. The best way is to keep reading about our group, meet us at an event, or assist us at the walk each summer. We are anxious to meet you and to let you know what your donation has done to assist someone who needs a caring companion.
John is our newest disabled super star who is working with Grete Krause, our Founder, to learn how adding Iris, and American Eskimo to his daily routine. These two are super stars in our book, as they are learning to help each other, one by adding support and assistance, and the other by giving great friendship and love.
As John is in a wheelchair, it is pretty great that Iris is finding that simply no problem for her gentle and caring heart. Hard to tell who is providing the love and support, as they seem to be doing pretty well, wouldn’t you say?
After a fun day at Petco, we wanted to show you the booth we setup for a day of donations. It is important for us to be there for us who need us, and thank you Petco for all your support of Puppy Love!
U.S. Senator Al Franken is working with Puppy Love Caring Canines to support our US Troops, by working with the Senate to find easier legislation options for service men and women who need assistance dogs. The key to much of what we do at Puppy Love Caring Canines, brings this issue to the front of many of our brave men and women; they need assistance, and a dog who is trained is often the solution!
One of the reasons we have had great response from Senator Al Franken is he is a dog lover, and as his staff quotes, “Sen. Franken Loves dogs and we sometimes have a hard time getting him to the next event when he sees one.” What more could you want, when you look at our Jackson above? He is a kind and patient assistance dog, and with the help of angels like Maureen, we are doing good for our Vets.
With the help of his team, Senator Al Franken is working on new U.S. Legislation that will make it easier for service men and women who are disabled to have and live with a service dog. The legislation is called, The Service Dogs for Veterans Act, which is cosponsored by Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia, who is a director of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. This Legislation will bring vets and dogs together, to provide long term health benefits to our disabled troops who have given us so much, and need a kind heart, like the one that exists in a service companion canine.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a common disorder that unfortunately has been with our American Troops since the days of the Revolutionary War. Called Shell Shock in World War I, and Battle Fatigue in the Korean War, today it is recognized as a disability and disorder that must be considered dangerous for our returning troops. With the aid of an assistance dog, the jarring mental attacks of PTSD can be managed easier, as the dog will be there through every event, to recognize any attack, warn the veteran of the condition, and remain a constant emotional relief until the veteran feels the panic dissipate. With the calm reassurance of a caring canine companion, our veterans are given a second chance at life, and a life that is worth living.
In 2009, Senator Al Franken was a visitor on Veteran’s Day, and Maureen introduced him to Passion. Here they are, meeting for the first time, and it was such an honor to have the Senator meet us and give us the support we so often need.
The dogs give us more than we could ever give back to them, and that is the magic of working with Senator Al Franken. He recognizes that the long term good will effort of bringing a caring canine companion into a veteran’s life will bring the U.S. reduced medical costs, an increase in best quality of life to our veterans, and a way to make a difference to many along the way.
Join me in thanking Maureen, Jackson, Passion and our U.S. Senator Al Franken for their good will and great efforts to those who are less fortunate!

Naomi, one of our new Puppy Love Caring Canines friends, is learning how positive life can be with a service dog! She has benefited enormously from our founder’s kind attention, and has mastered the skills to live life with a dog who really cares about her every need, like Kika our newest service dog!
Naomi has been so kind to share her service dog story, and here is her testimonial about life with Kika:
“Grete Krause and Puppy Love Caring Canines gave me my life back. I have suffered for years with Neurally Mediated Hypertension, which causes my blood pressure to drop suddenly and with little warning. I had fainted many times in public, which caused me to avoid going out of the house by myself. As an independent person this was very devastating and I became more and more isolated. One day when I was obedience training my new Miniature Schnauzer, Kika, she sat down, stared at me and refused to move. Shortly after this I became dizzy and lightheaded and had to quickly sit down to avoid fainting. At the time I thought that it was a coincidence, but then she did the same behavior on two other occasions. I found out through Total Recall School for Dogs that Grete’s Assistance Dog organization, Puppy Love Caring Canines, was one of the few organizations that would evaluate the possibility of training a person’s pet to become an Assistance Dog. Kika was approved to enter their training program and the training began. With the guidance of Grete I started teaching Kika how to be a Medical Alert Service Dog. This in itself forced me to go out into the public on a regular basis, but things were different now. Now that I had Kika to warn me of my drop in blood pressure I no longer fear passing out and coming to on a hard floor someplace or even worse in a parking lot or street. I started looking forward to going out again. Now with Kika’s assistance I go about my life as I did before acquiring Neurally Mediated Hypertension. I am very grateful to Grete and her wonderful organization, Puppy Love Caring Canines, who took the dis out of disability for me.
Thank you, so much!”
Naomi
The most important story to have understood about this entire process, is that it can take a few months, if not years, for the service dog and the new disabled apprentice to become a team. There much patience, learning, and training that must be overcome in order for the service dog and the disabled individual to become a team.
We enjoy hearing back from our teams like Naomi and Kika, and hope that we can hear from you as well. Any support that you can provide, in terms of your time, donation, or your promotion of our non-profit, is most welcome.
As a new team, it is very clear that Naomi and Kika both have what it takes to become an amazing positive force, and do great things with their days ahead. It is most rewarding for us at Puppy Love Caring Canines, to match a service dog with so much talent.
Naomi understood how long it can take to really benefit from the training, and the patience to become a team with her Kika. It takes time to really connect with your service dog, and if you do not have support, time and patience, it can be a steep climb to create the bond needed for your dog to become your team leader.
Without a commitment on your part to learn how to become a service dog trainer of sorts, you will not see the great success that Naomi has experienced.

Our benefiting people who receive our trained assistance dogs, are always wearing a smile! Your donation helps keep them smiling, and allows us to continue to bring more smiles to new and needy families across the Twin Cities Metro area and western Wisconsin. We are grateful for your kindness and support to continue our efforts to find the right match for the right people. Training dogs and people is not easy, but your contribution makes our work easier, and allows our efforts to result in the story, like Jerry and Lucy’s. Imagine where they would be if they had not found each other!
A big thank you goes out to Karen and Jerry Parks, who recently took a trip to the National Alzheimer’s Convention in Washington. Karen writes:
” Just wanted to take a minute and let you know the three of us did FABULOUS in DC. Attached is a picture which is on the National Alzheimer’s Forum front page. Thank you, thank you for taking on our training for service dog! She did us proud.
Lucy was PERFECT the whole trip. Jerry was good about not letting people touch her when she was in uniform. Lucy traveled by airplane, subway, and taxi. She laid at our feet in a huge ballroom for dinner with 600 people. She sat through 2 –3 hour meeting at Jerry’s feet. She sat in her back pack through a one hour interview and taping, absolutely astonishing the film crew. She visited our representatives and Senators on Capitol Hill. She surprised even me at how PERFECT she was. She drew attention at times when we were able to educate about service dogs and how they could benefit people with Alzheimer’s Disease. I am so glad we took her with us, she brings such joy and sense of calm to Jerry. ”
